“The Blue Trail” won the 2016 Wildlife Photographer of the Year People’s Choice Award. It was chosen from a list of 25 images pre-selected by the Natural History Museum from almost 50,000 submissions from 95 countries. The picture is of a kingfisher perfectly diving into a small pond on the outskirts of Salamanca in Spain. A etherial trail of blue compliments the image with an almost otherworldly aura. The kingfisher strikes surface of the water at 25 miles per hour, which required photorgapher Mario Cea five months and 5,000 attempts to create the photograph.
